Being visible online has never been more important for small businesses. Yet according to new research from team.blue’s State of European Business 2026: The Visibility Economy Report, many UK businesses are finding it harder than ever to get discovered, despite having more digital channels available to them than at any point in history.
The report surveyed more than 10,000 businesses across Europe, including 542 UK organisations, to understand how customers are finding businesses today, what challenges companies face online, and how prepared they are for the next wave of digital discovery.
The findings reveal a fascinating contradiction: UK businesses are digitally mature in many respects, but significant gaps remain that could affect future growth.
Getting found is becoming harder
More than a third (35.1%) of UK businesses say reaching customers online has become harder over the last two years. In an increasingly crowded digital landscape, standing out is becoming a challenge for businesses of every size.
While changing algorithms remain a major concern, many businesses are also feeling the impact of rising advertising costs and increased competition for attention. The result is a growing sense that visibility online is becoming more difficult to achieve and harder to control.
Word of mouth still rules
One of the most surprising findings from the research is that traditional referrals remain the UK’s most powerful discovery channel.
Over two thirds (68.2%) of UK businesses say customers most often discover them through word of mouth recommendations. Search engines remain important at 52.7%, but social media plays a much smaller role than many might expect, with just 35.3% citing it as a primary discovery source.
This makes the UK one of the most referral-driven markets in Europe. While that’s a strength, it also raises an important question: are businesses doing enough to turn those recommendations into measurable growth?
The AI opportunity most businesses aren’t ready for
Perhaps the most striking insight from the report relates to AI.
Although AI-powered search and discovery tools are rapidly changing how consumers find information online, UK businesses appear cautious about the shift. Only 58.9% believe AI will significantly change how customers discover businesses online – the lowest level of belief among the markets studied.
Even more concerning is preparedness. Nearly half (46.9%) of UK businesses say they are not prepared at all for AI-driven discovery.
As search behaviour evolves and AI assistants become a bigger part of the customer journey, this gap could become a significant competitive disadvantage for businesses that fail to adapt.
Websites matter more than ever
The report also challenges the idea that simply having a website is enough.
While more than 80% of UK businesses have a website, only a small minority accurately track how website visitors become leads or customers. Many businesses are investing time and money into their online presence without a clear understanding of what is actually generating results.
At the same time, confidence in AI search optimisation remains low, suggesting that many organisations are unsure whether their websites are prepared for the next generation of search experiences.
What should businesses focus on next?
The research points to several clear priorities for UK businesses:
- Understanding how AI is changing online discovery
- Building on the strength of referrals with stronger digital foundations
- Improving visibility beyond a single channel
- Tracking what happens after customers arrive on a website
- Creating a more joined-up approach across marketing tools and platforms
The businesses that succeed over the next few years are likely to be those that combine trusted relationships with a strong, measurable digital presence.
