In light of this, we believe it worthwhile to explain how to change the default&nbsp;<strong>admin<\/strong>&nbsp;username that WordPress uses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How to change the admin username<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first step is to log into WordPress with your&nbsp;<strong>admin<\/strong>&nbsp;username as you normally would.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/wordpress_login.jpg\" alt=\"Wordpress Login\" title=\"Wordpress Login\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong>&nbsp;The usual URL for the WordPress login page is your domain name appended by \/wp-admin<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The next step is to create the new user who will later become your admin user.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is done by going to the&nbsp;<strong>Users<\/strong>&nbsp;menu and clicking on&nbsp;<em>Add New<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/wordpress_users.jpg\" alt=\"Wordpress Users\" title=\"Wordpress Users\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>You will now need to enter in the information for the new user, as illustrated by the screenshot below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/wordpress_users3.jpg\" alt=\"Wordpress Users 3\" title=\"Wordpress Users 3\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong>&nbsp;The email address that you enter needs to be a different one to the one currently assigned to the&nbsp;<strong>admin<\/strong>&nbsp;username.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We recommend that a strong password, combining a mix of upper and lower case letters, numbers and punctuation symbols is used. If you are having problems thinking of a strong password, try replacing some letters with numbers (for example, replacing&nbsp;<strong>e<\/strong>&nbsp;with&nbsp;<strong>3<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>a<\/strong>&nbsp;with&nbsp;<strong>4<\/strong>) and adding an exclamation mark to the end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Make sure you choose&nbsp;<strong>Administrator<\/strong>&nbsp;as the role for the user.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/wordpress_users4.jpg\" alt=\"Wordpress Users 4\" title=\"Wordpress Users 4\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, once everything has been filled in, click on the&nbsp;<em>Add User<\/em>&nbsp;icon at the bottom of the page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that we have created the new username and assigned it the&nbsp;<strong>administrator<\/strong>&nbsp;role, the next step is to log out as&nbsp;<strong>admin<\/strong>&nbsp;and log back in as this new user.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you are logged back in, click on&nbsp;<em>Users<\/em>&nbsp;in the&nbsp;<strong>Users<\/strong>&nbsp;menu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hover over the&nbsp;<strong>admin<\/strong>&nbsp;username and click on&nbsp;<em>Delete<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/wordpress_delete_admin.jpg\" alt=\"Wordpress Delete Admin\" title=\"Wordpress Delete Admin\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>You will now see a confirmation screen and you should tick the option&nbsp;<em>Attribute all posts and links to<\/em>&nbsp;and then select your new username from the drop down menu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong>&nbsp;Selecting this option means that none of the posts or comments the&nbsp;<strong>admin<\/strong>&nbsp;username created will be deleted, as they will all become associated with your new username.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You have now successfully changed your WordPress&nbsp;<strong>admin<\/strong>&nbsp;username and, by doing so, will have considerably increased the security of your blog and it&#8217;s defence against automated brute force login attempts.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In line with many other hosting providers, we have recently seen a large rise in the number of automated login attempts against WordPress installations.
