Article

Our system engineers have made important changes to the security settings used for email and FTP passwords.

What has changed?

From the 26th April 2010, when editing an FTP or Email user password the following rules will apply:

  • The password cannot contain a user's name, postcode, date of birth or any word made up from password or letmein - such as pa55w0rd or l3tm31n.
  • The password must pass a check to ensure that it is not based on dictionary words or words that are commonly used in passwords
  • The password cannot be the same as any password used previously for the same username
  • You can now block FTP access from all IP addresses other than those you specify
  • The password strength meter and FTP white listing is also now available on the account creation page within Designer Hosting accounts.

Note: The new password must be at least 8 characters long and contain both letters and numbers.

Why have we made this change?

Namesco takes customers data security extremely seriously. As part of our ongoing commitment to protecting our customers, these changes have been introduced to help protect you and ensure the passwords that you use are strong and secure.

What other steps can I take?

In addition to the above steps all customers are strongly advised to take the following precautions:

  • Ensure that all computers have anti-virus and anti spy-ware installed and that it is up to date at all times.
  • If you connect to your web space via FTP ensure that that this PC has been scanned and is free from viruses before you connect. Some viruses can steal FTP user names and passwords from your PC.
  • If you use CMS software on your website such as Joomla or Wordpress ensure that you update this as and when updates are released.
If you have any further questions about this update please raise a new support enquiry via your Online Control Panel.
