77% of British consumers prefer .uk

According to a report released by Nominet (November 2009), the domain name registry for .uk domain names, 77% of British consumers prefer to use a .uk rather than a .com when searching for information on the Internet.

The report also indicates that despite the current economic climate, the global domain name industry has seen an 8% growth with 187.6 million domain names registered worldwide.

"Generic top level domains (gTLDs), such as .org and .com, have grown on average by 6% whilst the country code Top Level Domains (ccTLDs) including.uk and .de (the German registry) fared slightly better and together generated a 10% average growth in registrations," says Nominet.

On the 15th August 2009 Telnic Ltd, the registry operator for the .tel domain extension announced that they will shortly be delivering a new solution for text-based advertising listings, enabling .tel domain owners to use more traditional and measurable methods of making money from their domain names.

Free Subdomains

A new facility for managing subdomains has been introduced to the Namesco Online Control Panel.

What is a subdomain?

Simply put, a subdomain is any domain that is part of a larger domain. If you own a .uk domain name (e.g. names.co.uk), then the subdomains that you can define (e.g. webmail.names.co.uk) are often referred to as ‘4th-level’ domain names.

Subdomains are a useful tool to market and promote a specific product range or to subdivide large websites.

$5.1m for Toys.com

Toys.com bought by Toys R Us for $5.1m

The importance retailers are now placing on online trading was highlighted with the purchase of the domain name Toys.com, brought by Toys R Us for a whopping $5.1m.

Toys R Us which trades from 73 outlets in the UK, entered into a bidding war for the key domain name with domain holding company National A-1, which was its sole competitor for toys.com for the last £2m of the auction.

As one of the world's largest dedicated toy and baby product retailers, Toys R Us have confirmed their commitment to the online sale channel through the acquisition of this domain name.

So why are some website names worth so much money?

The short answer is because it’s a commonly used descriptive term.

New TLDs Update

ICANN announces set-back in new TLD application process.

ICANN the organisation responsible for managing and co-ordinating the Domain Name System, announced at its annual convention, held this week in Mexico city, that the opening up of the application process for new TLDs will be delayed until late 2009 or the first quarter of 2010.

Some of the new TLDs (top level domains) being put forward include .music and .sport. The news came as surprise and generated some disappointment for organisations promoting new domain extensions, however ICANN Executive Officer, Paul Levins, highlighted that the decision was taken in the interest of ensuring best practice throughout the application process, and broader issues involving trade mark policy were being considered.

Top Speed Checker

We are really pleased to hear that in recent broadband speed tests carried out by a well known provider, speedtest.net (London area), powered by Namesco, was one of only two speed checker sites to surpass the 90% testing threshold.

Children in Need

Worcester based Internet Services Provider Namesco went Children in Need crazy today helping to raise money for the renowned charity.

As well as donating a pound from every new domain name sale made on their popular website www.names.co.uk, staff at local Perdiswell Park offices participated in a day of activities and challenges to raise money in support of the cause.

Customers calling to place orders with Namesco were also treated to the potential of talking to a famous movie star, as staff took part in themed fancy dress. For a donation managers were happy to make drinks during morning break times and staff took part in fun challenges and activities during lunch breaks, including team races, hockey and a love hearts eating competition.

Midlands based Vamix NV (UK) the award winning food wholesaler; known for their brambly apple turnovers kindly donated delicious cakes for staff to purchase throughout the afternoon, with all proceeds going to the charity.

Gillian Pope from Namesco^s Charity committee said "It's great to see so many staff taking part and helping us to raise a fantastic amount for Children in Need"

Names.co.uk on the up

According to research carried out by market research firm Nielsen Online, Names.co.uk was listed as the 8th fastest growing website during the past year.

Societys concerns about the economy are being reflected through the results, as the top ten positions were dominated by money saving websites.

Namesco have seen an increase in broadband usage during the summer months and have attributed this to recent economic challenges and the incremental summer weather. Holidaymakers are choosing UK breaks over foreign destinations as a way of saving money during this time of economic uncertainty. Consumers are searching for the best deals online and are spending more time indoors, which has increased Internet usage.

Nielsen Online commented the potential shake-up of domain name addresses and the huge increases in personalised web pages means consumers are more attuned to creating their own websites. Registration of .Me domain extensions hit 100,000 just two weeks after launch as more people are interested in having a personal connection to the web, using their websites to share personal blogs and photos.

Internet Shake up

ICANN Announces its support for new TLD domain extensions!

On Friday, ICANN, the net's regulator, voted unanimously to relax the strict rules on so-called "top-level" domain names, such as .com or .uk. The decision means that companies could turn brands into web addresses, while individuals could use their names such as .smith or .namesco.

"We are opening up a new world and I think this cannot be underestimated," said Roberto Gaetano, a member of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).

As one of the UK’s largest registrars for Domain Names, Namesco have welcomed the news!

“Namesco has always been at the very forefront of new domain name extensions. We are all waiting to hear the next steps from ICANN, but nevertheless, despite being early days we’re all very excited about what this means for the internet community as well as for Namesco and its customers.” Jason Smith, Director (Namesco Ltd).

Namesco join Ofcom Code of Practice

We are pleased to announce that Namesco has signed up to Ofcoms new voluntary code of practice aimed at building consumer’s trust in the ISP industry.

The new code, announced this month states that ISPs are to provide clear caveats and accurate broadband speed estimates at the point of sale and on their websites.

Namesco bought by Dada

Founded in 1996, Namesco is now the fourth largest provider in the UK of domain names and hosting services and among the top 50 worldwide (source: Netcraft Company Analysis, January 2007). Based in Worcester and with offices in London, Namesco employs 60 highly qualified professionals and manages roughly 265,000 domains.

Already a major player in both Italy and Spain in Internet and domain & hosting, Dada is moving forward to strengthen its leadership in the European market with an eye toward continued international expansion.

"Following the acquisition of the Spanish company Nominalia in August 2006, Dada's purchase of Namesco is part of Dada Group's expansion strategy, indicating Dada's priority in strengthening its presence in the professional online services business" commented Paolo Barberis, Chairman of Dada. "The investments in the domain and hosting sector which is represented by the Dada.pro division and already characterized by a solid international customer base, will allow Dada to further expand its offer towards more and more advanced services for companies and professionals online presence in a Web 2.0 perspective".

In the first quarter of 2007 the Dada.pro division (made up of Register.it, nominalia and Namesco) headed by Claudio Corbetta recorded a turnover of 3.9 million euros (equal to 11% of consolidated revenues for the Dada Group), an EBITDA of 1.1 million and an EBIT of 840,000. With the acquisition of Namesco the total number of clients in the Dada.pro division rises to 200,000 while domains grow to over 700,000, of which over 60% are international.

Kevin Savage, Managing Director and Jason Smith, Operations Director will continue to run Namesco - now the UK division of Dada.pro with a view to expansion through increased marketing initiatives and through acquisitions. All operations of Namesco including staffing remain wholly unaffected and it's business as usual.

Top for service again

In a recent independent study conducted by the consumer price comparison site Moneysupermarket.com Namesco was named as one of the top 4 ISPs for service overall scoring 9 out of 10 marks for Customer Service, Technical Support, speed, billing and reliability!

Moneysupermarket's poll asked the opinions of over 4500 consumers, and concluded that many of the large marketing driven ISPs have been unable to cope with demand for their "free packages" which has negatively affected service levels. As a result, the survey found that broadband users enjoy a better experience with smaller specialist providers such as Namesco.

Up to 8Mb BroadbandMax to roll out nationwide!

BT have recently announced that they are to upgrade over 5300 exchanges nationwide to enable up to 8Mb broadband connectivity. The upgrade is planned for the first week of April 2006 and will extend to all but 150 of BT's exchanges.

.EU submissions now available

We are pleased to announce that we are now accepting submission applications for .EU domain names. The registration process will take place across three phases between December 7th 2005 and April 7th 2006 - we are now accepting applications to be submitted to the queue for each phase; Sunrise 1, Sunrise 2 and Landrush. We will hold your application and it will be submitted to the appropriate queue, the moment the registry phase opens.

The fee for Sunrise applications is £129.99+VAT, which includes administration and registry fees for the first year of registration; successfully registered domains will renew annually at only £34.99+VAT. Landrush applications are charged at £1+VAT, with successful registrations being charged at £24.99+VAT for the first year.

Deregulation of .ES domain by Spanish registry

.ES is the official domain extension for Spain. Previously subject to restrictions, the Spanish registry has decided to de-regulate the domain in 2 phases:

The first phase, the sunrise period, commences on the 6th September; Namesco has opened a queue for those who qualify under the Sunrise rules:

Phase 1: Sunrise for trademark holders and companies registered in Spain

• Owners or licensees of commercial names and registered trademarks

(Spanish trademarks, Community trademarks and International trademarks valid in Spain), denominations of origin and other industrial rights protected in Spain can apply for the corresponding .es domain names.

• Foundations, associations, companies established according to Spanish Law and first branches duly registered at the Spanish Trade Register of foreign companies can apply for the following domain names:

• The complete name of the organization as it is included in the document of constitution. (The type of organization or its abbreviation can be omitted).

• An abbreviation of the complete name of the organization that unmistakably identifies the organization. (Applications for abbreviated names, which do not reasonably and according to intuition correspond with the complete name of the organization will be failed by the registry).

The Sunrise queue will close on 19th October 2005

Phase 2: the Landrush period.

The Landrush period is for general registration on a first come, first served basis. A registrant can apply for as many names as he/she wishes. A local presence for the admin contact will be required but we are able to offer this.

Namesco Acquires NDO.com Limited

The board of directors of Namesco Limited are delighted to announce that the company has today acquired the entire issued share capital of Simply.com Limited for a total cash consideration of £2.15 million pounds.

So, what are the upgrades?

5 weeks ago, we announced the significant purchase of a new, top-end storage device; the highest performing NAS (Network Attached Storage) in its class. It was required due to the increasing demand for Namesco's hosting services and increasing mail usage particularly from the Namesco e-mail only packages and web-mail facility.

This significant upgrade installation has also further improved the redundancy and reliability of all elements and possible points of failure in our network infrastructure from mail servers, domain name servers (DNS) and switches to name a few.

Network Upgrades

Planning ahead is routine here at Namesco Limited not least for our Senior Network Managers. As we continue to grow at pace, we must upgrade and expand our Hosting Network Infrastructure.

Back in Autumn 2003, predictions showed that by the beginning of May 2004, we would require a significant upgrade to our master storage device (which holds web site data and backups) and our mail servers (so they can process and deliver more mail, more quickly).

Therefore, over the last 6 months, we have been carefully investigating and more recently testing new top-end Storage Hardware. A solution was purchased from one of the industry leaders in Storage Devices in March 2004 for £83,000 and is the highest performing NAS (Network Attached Storage) system in its class.

It is due to be integrated into our hosting Infrastructure in Telehouse London over the next 2 weeks and will significantly improve web site access speeds and mail delivery speeds.

There are 2 important points to make regarding this investment:

1) The new storage device and our resultant enhanced network infrastructure puts us in a powerful position and many steps ahead of most other companies providing similar web services. It allows us to further enhance and develop our hosting and e-mail offerings while at the same time delivering vastly improved access times and mail delivery transmission speeds.

2) The £83,000 spent on this new hardware was paid for out of Namesco's own cash reserves. This is crucial in your decision to become a new customer or to remain as one as it is stands testament to our sound business, ongoing sustainability and investment to improve all-round customer services.

Once the upgrades are complete, we will make a full announcement.
